10 Tips for Work At Home Success

Do you want to go from a daily trip to a home office? Working from home is a growing trend, especially in the United States. In Gig’s new economy, 34 percent of the US workforce is considered independent, according to the Nasdaq. Over the next decade, this non-traditional employment trend will grow 179 percent as detailed in an article on QuickBooks.

I am lucky to have a home office that is on the top floor of the barn on my property. No bottlenecks, no climatic problems, and I take my dogs to work with me every day.

One of the things that keep me focused on work during “work hours” is to make sure I’m actually “at work.” There is a good balance between the freedoms that working from home provides. And you need to manage your space and time with planning, discipline and organization.

If you want to move your work or business to this kind of flexible arrangement, I have 10 tips that can help you make that happen and stay on track.

1 – Create a separate space

As I mentioned earlier, my work area is in a separate building. But some people become very creative in their homes or apartments and create a room or dedicated area for their home office. Before living in a rural setting, I lived in a Southern California town in a Craftsman bungalow with a separate garage for a converted car in a studio / office. If possible, create a separate space that ideally allows a door that closes to distractions and maintains a professional atmosphere.

2 – Declare your home space

I make a rule to not take my work home. Instead, I use this as my place of relaxation, a place to disconnect and disconnect. Maintaining a division line helps you achieve everything on your list of things to do, in addition to avoiding the need to leave your home to get away from work.

3 – Have a schedule and stick to it

What works for one company may not work for another. Find a schedule that suits your schedule and your clients. Since I interact with people from all over the world, that can be interesting. Whatever your schedule, be sure to keep one that you feel comfortable with and that you can commit to, rather than being inaccurate about when the work begins and ends.

4 – No personal tasks while working

One of the benefits of working from home is the flexibility to go to the store whenever you want or meet with a friend for lunch. The key to making the most of your day is not making this a common practice. Maintaining a regular work schedule will help you stay focused and maintain a professional environment.

5 – Use voice mail

If you do not have a virtual assistant, you can forward your phone calls to, use voicemail. Do not answer your phone when you are working on a project or task. You can always return a phone call, but the loss of productivity is gone forever.

6 – Take Breaks

This is difficult for me because I tend to focus so much on my work that the hours go by. Quite the opposite of what I might think of someone who could get up from my desk and take a break at any time. The only rest that I never lose and that gives me the opportunity to recharge is to go home to lunch every day. This refreshes me and I hope to return to the office to continue where I left off.

7 – When you are finished, you are finished

Having established working hours and not returning to work to do that, one more thing will allow you to stay on a schedule and not overload yourself. That’s where productivity really decreases. The same project will be there the next day, so if it’s not an urgent matter just leave it.

8 – You are a professional

Do not identify yourself as “I do xyx, but it’s home.” Uncomplainingly. You are a professional, no matter where your office resides. With this mindset, you can attract customers who will perceive it as a legitimate business just like any other brick and mortar company.

9 – Do not forget about people

Working from home can be insulating. Yes, we talk on the phone, we communicate on social networks, we send text messages and we send emails. However, there is nothing that replaces face-to-face time with colleagues, prospects and clients. Meet with others at lunch or evening events, and do not neglect your time of human interaction.

10 – Dressing

I can not wear a dress or suit, or make-up, but I shower, prepare and mentally prepare to use my virtual business hat during work hours. Be prepared and ready for your work day: you may be called to a last minute meeting or a video conference.
